Ladies work together to raise awareness about lupus

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) This space at Salon Noir may look like your typical salon, but in a matter of days, it will be runway ready!

Ashley, Alyshia, Jessica, and Lawanda are talking about plans for this weekend’s Mother’s Day Fashion Show. A portion of proce from the event will go toward the Making Lupus Look Good foundation.

“Making Lupus look good was something that I created in 2014. It was birthed out of pain. In 2012, I suddenly fell ill. I remember getting that call, saying, you know, you tested positive for Lupus,” said Alyshia Merchant.

Alyshia is doing all she can to raise awareness. That’s why putting on events like this weekend’s fashion show is important.

Lawanda Menefee is the president of the online boutique Bry B Fashions. She’ll be supplying the clothes for the fashion show.

“We try to encourage women of all shapes and sizes to love theirselves and also to support one another,” Lawanda said.

Jessica Daye is providing the space for Saturday’s event. She’s the owner of Salon Noir in Roanoke. This isn’t the first time she’ll be working with the Making Lupus Look Good Foundation.

“What we do is we do makeovers for women who are suffering from Lupus. A lot of people don’t know this, but a lot of Lupus patients lose their hair; and so, what we do is self-esteem building,” she said.

And it’s that message of building women up that inspired Ashley to join the cause.

“I knew a few people with lupus so I felt like it would be a good foundation to be a part of,” said Ashley Kent, a stylist at Salon Noir.
