State: Women must choose
losing a child or job security?

Re: “Pregnant prison guards say California forces them to choose: Their jobs or their babies” (Mercurynews.com, April 8):

I am horrified about the laws that the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation impose on pregnant women regarding their health, job security and what they have to go through.

The options that these correctional officers have now in terms of work during their pregnancies are slim to none, almost guaranteeing a negative impact on them and their babies.

Being a correctional officer while pregnant opens up doors to miscarriages, emotional trauma and hepatitis C, for which treatment during pregnancy is not recommended leading to possible transmission during birth and an overall unhealthy individual.

This system doesn’t allow a switch in positions without diminishing the seniority these women have worked for prior to pregnancy.

No woman should choose between the possibility of losing a child and job security. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation ne to change its policy back to the one in effect up until 2015, one that accommodated pregnant women.
