Zoë Folbigg noticed a guy called Mark on the train from Hitchin, Hertfordshire, to London, one day in July 2003. For a year, she tried to catch his attention every day on the train while on the way to work. It took many years and setbacks before her vigil paid off, but for her, it was worth the wait.
It all began when Zoë noticed a young, handsome man on the train reading the book A Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. She was instantly attracted to him and kept trying to catch his eye, but he was hopelessly immersed in his book.
Zoë says, “I tried to catch his eye, made an effort in the morning to look good when I got on the train, but he was just lost in his book!”
Zoë states how one time she dropped her train ticket on the floor in front of the “Train Man” in hopes to start a conversation. “He just picked it up and handed it to me, I said thank you, and that was it, he just went on reading.”
This went on for close to a year—then she decided to do something drastic on her birthday in May 2004. She wrote a note to the “Train Man” asking to meet for drinks, but she was too nervous to hand it to him on that day.
Finally, 11 days later, she mustered up the courage to give the note to him on the train. She had included her email address in the note.
That day, he replied with an email that read: “That was a wonderfully brave thing to do, but unfortunately I already have a girlfriend, Happy Birthday!”
Eight months later on Jan. 28, 2005, Zoë received an email from Mark asking her if she was still interested in that drink. His circumstances had changed now and he was finally single! Zoë was exploding with joy … her Train Man was back!
Eventually, they met for drinks, got to know each other, and started dating.
They traveled around the world together, and three years later, he proposed to her on a train in Australia!
Zoë and Mark tied the knot in 2009, and now, they have had two boys together.
Zoë wrote a book based on her real-life experience, which sold very well internationally.
