One mum-to-be was so disturbed by her craving that she put a shout-out on a mum’s Facebook forum to see whether any other ladies had felt the same, according to our sister paper Manchester Evening News.

One mum-to-be admitted developing a liking for the green scourer part of a cleaning sponge.
The 32-year-old said: “It had to be a bath sponge. There was nothing better then a wet bath sponge to chew on.
“I cried during labour that I needed my wet sponge. I used to get up in the middle of the night and just sit on the side of the bath chewing it till my jaw ached.

She said: “I think it was the texture of them as I never ate them I just chewed them and sucked them.
“I usually just did it when I was in the bath, so I could do it on my own. I’d spend hours in the bath.”
She added: “I must have spent about £50 on them in Home Bargains as I never sucked on the same sponge twice.”
